What Remains in the Water

spinachpalmpool

The resort pool was unnaturally still at dawn, its surface reflecting the palm trees that stood like silent witnesses to everything that had happened here. Elena sat at the edge, her feet dangling in the chlorinated water, watching the light creep across the tiles.

Three days ago, this same pool had been the backdrop to it all—Marcus laughing with his business partner, their hands touching as he passed her a fresh drink. The way she'd looked at him. The way Elena had pretended not to notice, stuffing her mouth with spinach salad to avoid having to speak, to avoid having to name what she'd already understood.

She'd known for months. Something about the way he came home from work, showering immediately to wash away the scent of someone else's perfume. But knowing and witnessing were different creatures entirely.

Now her palm pressed against the warm concrete, grounding her. The wedding ring was gone—she'd left it on the nightstand before flying down here alone. Marcus had begged, of course. Said it meant nothing. Said he loved her. But the worst part wasn't the betrayal itself; it was the way he'd made her feel crazy for suspecting it, gaslighting her until she'd doubted her own instincts.

A hotel worker appeared with a net, skimming leaves from the water's surface. He didn't look up at her. She appreciated that small kindness.

Elena stood up, water dripping from her feet. She wasn't here to confront him or demand answers anymore. She was here to see the place where her marriage had died, to understand that some things, once broken, couldn't be repaired. The spinach had tasted bitter that night, but not as bitter as the truth.

She walked back toward her room, leaving wet footprints on the concrete. Somewhere behind her, the water settled again, smooth and untroubled, as if nothing had ever disturbed it at all.
