Wellness Era

Maya's summer glow-up wasn't going according to plan.

Standing in her kitchen at 7 AM, staring down a papaya that looked suspiciously like an alien organ, Maya questioned every life choice that led here. Three days ago, she'd watched an influencer's "summer transformation" video and decided she, too, would become That Girl — the one who wakes up at dawn, journals, and eats exotic fruits like it's casual.

The papaya sat there, judging her.

"Just eat it," she told herself. "It's literally just fruit. You got this."

She took a bite.

Immediately regretted it.

It tasted like old melon crossed with a gym sock. How was this supposed to be a superfood? No one on TikTok mentioned the gym sock part.

Her phone buzzed. Jasmine, her best friend since seventh grade, wanted to go to the mall then get boba.

Maya hesitated. The old Maya would've said yes instantly. But new-and-improved Maya had a green juice scheduled at 10 and yoga at 11. She couldn't just ditch her glow-up for boba with her ride-or-die, right?

Right?

She texted back: "can we do 2 instead? wellness era things 😅"

"wellness era????" came the instant reply. "girl it's literally SUMMER. our only job is to be unhinged in the food court."

Maya sighed and grabbed the bag of organic spinach she'd bought for $7.99 — honestly, highway robbery — and threw it in the blender with whatever else was in the fridge. The resulting concoction looked like something that would come out of a swamp creature.

"This is fine," she said, and drank it anyway.

By the time Jasmine showed up at 2, Maya had fully committed to the bit. Yoga mat still out. Vitamin water on the counter. An aesthetic succulent that she definitely didn't know how to take care of.

Jasmine took one look at the kitchen and stopped dead. "Okay, who are you and what have you done with my bestie?"

"I'm evolving," Maya said, trying to sound confident. "Joining the movement. You should too, honestly. I read this article about how—"

"Maya." Jasmine's voice dropped. "Is everything good? Like, actually good?"

And just like that, the wellness mask cracked.

Maya sank onto a barstool. "I don't know. I just feel like everyone's got their stuff figured out except me. Like, I see people online and they're just... doing things. Being people. And I'm still just here."

Jasmine sat beside her. "First off, those people are being paid to pretend their lives are perfect. Second, you literally just forced yourself to eat a papaya this morning. That's not wellness, that's self-harm."

Maya laughed despite herself.

"Look," Jasmine continued, "you don't need a glow-up. You need to hang out with your friend and get overpriced drinks with tapioca pearls at the bottom. That's literally the only vitamin you actually need."

"Vitamin boba," Maya said.

"Exactly."

They ended up at the food court anyway, and Maya got her boba with extra toppings because screw it, sometimes being fourteen meant letting yourself have both the wellness era and the unhinged era simultaneously.

The papaya went in the trash. Maya decided evolution could wait until fall.
