Weightless in the Deep End

The padel court echoed with laughter and rhythmic thwacking - couples in their matching tennis whites, moving in synchronized contentment. Marco sat on his balcony with whiskey, watching them through the screen of his iPhone, scrolling through photos of Elena that still lived in his camera roll. Three weeks since she'd left, and he'd come to this villa alone, as if proximity to their last happy place might resurrect something dead.

Buster, their chocolate lab, pressed his wet nose against Marco's knee. The dog had been sleeping on Elena's side of the bed every night, as if holding her place. Marco finished his drink and walked down to the private pool, stripping to his boxers. Night swimming had become his ritual - the only time he felt weightless, suspended in water that held him like a lover who hadn't yet decided to leave.

He was twenty minutes in, floating on his back and watching satellites cross the sky, when he saw it: a black bear at the edge of the property, massive and silent, watching him. It wasn't frightening - it was oddly reverent, as if the creature bore witness to his solitude. Marco treaded water, heart hammering, and the bear dipped its head once before turning back into the forest.

The next morning, his iPhone buzzed continuously. Work emails, his mother checking in, Elena's sister asking if he'd heard from her. He silenced it and took Buster down to the beach. The dog ran joyfully into the surf, and Marco waded in after him, letting the cold ocean shock him awake.

"You're bearing it well," everyone kept saying. They meant his composure, his calm at dinner parties, his ability to discuss logistics of separation without raising his voice. What they didn't see was how he spent hours underwater, holding his breath until his lungs burned, practicing for the moment when he'd finally stop fighting and just let go.

That night, he deleted all his photos of Elena - eight years compressed into digital nothingness. Then he called Buster inside, locked the villa doors, and lay in the center of the bed alone. The dog curled at his feet, and Marco finally slept, dreaming of bears that swam like men and women who walked away like seasons changing, inevitable and beyond anyone's control.
