Watermarks

The kitchen was filled with the sound of running water, the spinach leaves wilting under my gaze as I watched them collapse in the colander. It was therapeutic, watching something surrender completely to heat. Outside, thunder rattled the windows, but inside, everything was quiet. Too quiet.

Mark's iPhone buzzed against the granite countertop, screen illuminating with a notification I shouldn't have seen. A message from Sarah: "Can't stop thinking about last night. The water was perfect."

My hands froze under the faucet, water streaming over my fingers, unnoticed. Sarah from accounting. Sarah who'd joined our swim club last month. Sarah whose marriage was supposedly falling apart.

The spinach sat abandoned in the sink as I reached for his phone. I knew his password—something about trust that now felt like a punchline. The messages went back weeks, escalating quickly. Mentioned of water temperature, of breath holding, of staying under longer than they should. They weren't swimming.

The front door opened. Mark's footsteps, heavy with work fatigue, echoed in the hallway. I slammed the phone down, returned to the spinach, began chopping with vicious precision.

"Something smells good," he said, wrapping arms around my waist. His mouth against my neck, hands settling on my hips. I flinched.

"Just spinach," I said. "With garlic. Like you like it."

He frowned, sensing something. "Everything okay?"

"Fine," I said, forcing a smile. "Just tired. Long week."

The water continued running, forgotten, as I dropped handfuls of spinach into the hot pan. They sizzled and collapsed instantly, surrendering completely. Like I had. Like trust does. Like secrets do when they finally surface, gasping for air.

"Dinner's ready," I said, turning off the burner. "Should I set the table?"

He nodded, already reaching for his phone. As he scrolled, I watched his face for something—guilt, fear, anything. But his expression remained placid as still water. Deep, unreadable, and utterly unknowable.

We ate in silence, the spinach heavy on my tongue, while thunder finally broke outside, the rain washing over everything.
