Waterlogged Confidence

Maya stood at the edge of the pool party, her curls spiraling into an unholy frizz pyramid. Three hours of flat-ironing, wasted.

"Hey! You coming in or what?" Jake called from the water, droplets cascading down his stupid perfect abs.

"Just warming up," Maya lied, clutching her towel like a lifeline. Somewhere beyond the pool fence, the thwack-thwack-thwack of padel matches echoed from the country club courts—that's where the Populars usually hung out, NOT at Chloe's epic pre-start-of-summer rager.

Then she saw HER. Riley, the new girl, sauntering poolside in a bikini that screamed main character energy. Her SILKY hair fell in perfect beach waves, because of course it did. The girl was an absolute fox, and worse—she was heading straight for Maya.

"I'm Riley," she said, flipping her hair like she was in a shampoo commercial. "You're Maya, right? From AP Bio?"

Maya nodded, suddenly painfully aware of her own hair rebellion. "Yeah. Hi."

"Your hair is SO cool," Riley said sincerely. "I've been trying to get volume like that forever. Mine's just... blah."

Maya blinked. "You think?"

"Duh." Riley pulled a hair tie from her wrist. "Wanna play padel tomorrow? My cousin's got a court near his house. He said he'd teach us."

The invitation hung between them, heavy with possibility. This was IT. The moment. The turning point.

Maya looked at the pool, then back at Riley. "Actually..." she dropped her towel on the lounge chair. "Let me show you my cannonball."
