Water Under the Bridge

Elena adjusted the brim of her baseball cap, pulling it low over her eyes. The stolen corporate documents burned in her bag like hot coals, but she couldn't bring herself to care anymore. Twenty years of corporate espionage had taught her that everyone eventually drowns in the same ocean of compromise.

She sat by the river, watching water ripple around the pylons of the bridge where she'd first met David. He'd worn a ridiculous fedora that day, claiming it made him look like a film noir detective. They'd laughed about his hat while he briefed her on her first assignment infiltrating the pharmaceutical company across the water.

Now David was dead. Heart attack at forty-eight, stress and bourbon doing what no counterintelligence agent ever could. And Elena was still playing the game, still being the bull in everyone's china shop, smashing through lives and corporate secrets without purpose.

Her phone buzzed. The handler.

"Package secured?"

"Yeah," she said, tossing the bag onto the passenger seat of her car. "I'm done, Marcus."

"What? You have two more years onβ€”"

"I'm done. Find yourself another spy."

She drove to the marina where David kept his boat before the bank seized it. The water stretched dark and endless before her, reflecting a sky bruised purple with twilight. She threw the bag of documents into the current, watching it sink like a stone.

David had told her once that they were both just people who'd learned to swim in other people's secrets. He was right. But tonight, for the first time in twenty years, Elena felt the weight of all those secrets lift.

She took off the baseball cap and let the wind catch her gray-streaked hair. The water kept moving, indifferent and eternal, and somewhere under all the lies, she finally recognized herself.
