WATER LOGGED

waterdogpadel

The padel court hummed with Friday afternoon energy — the rhythmic thwack of racquets meeting balls, laughter from the spectators' bench, the sharp squeak of sneakers on artificial turf. Maya stood at the baseline, gripping her rented racquet like it might save her from drowning in social anxiety.

"You good, Maya?" called Tyler, the junior varsity captain who'd somehow become her first crush this semester. "Your serve."

"Yeah, yeah, I'm good," she lied, wiping sweat from her forehead. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. This was supposed to be casual hangouts with the tennis crowd, but somehow Maya — who'd never played padel in her life — had gotten talked into joining their Friday pickup games.

The ball came at her. She swung. Missed completely. It hit the fence behind her with a pathetic clatter.

Someone snickered. Maya's face burned hotter than the sun beating down on the court's metal fencing.

Then she heard it — barking. A golden retriever puppy bounded through the open gate, tail wagging like crazy, tongue flopping out in pure joy. Chaos erupted. The players scattered. Someone's water bottle overturned, liquid spreading across the court in a glistening puddle.

The puppy skidded through the water, paws slipping, and crashed directly into Tyler's legs, knocking him into the net. Everyone froze for half a second — then burst out laughing. Tyler himself was wheezing, sprawled dramatically against the mesh fence while the puppy attempted to enthusiastically lick his face.

"Bro, that's literally your dog?" someone asked.

"My sister's," Tyler gasped between laughs, wiping drool from his cheek. "Buster escaped again."

Maya found herself laughing too — really laughing, not the polite nervous laugh she'd been using all afternoon. Something unclenched in her chest. The perfection she'd been trying so hard to maintain — the right clothes, the right skills, the right everything — dissolved in this ridiculous moment with a wet dog and spilled water and a bunch of teenagers losing it together.

"Maya!" Tyler called, still grinning. "Come help me rescue this idiot from the net before he chews through it."

She stepped forward, not overthinking it for once. The puppy's fur smelled like sunshine and chaos. Tyler's hand brushed hers as they worked together to untangle Buster's leash from the court fence. For a second, their eyes met. Something electric sparked there.

Maybe, just maybe, she thought as the puppy finally tugged free and everyone scrambled to resume their game, maybe she didn't have to be perfect to belong here. Maybe she just had to show up.

The water from the overturned bottle reflected sunlight across the court like tiny stars. Maya picked up her racquet again. This time, when she served, the ball went exactly where she wanted it to go.
