Water Break Warriors
Maya's phone buzzed with another text from Chen: 'U ready or what?' She tossed it onto her bed and stared at her reflection. The neon yellow padel outfit she'd begged her mom for suddenly felt ridiculous. Like she was trying too hard.
The community center courts were packed. Maya spotted Chen immediately, holding court with the varsity crowd like she owned the place. Maya's stomach did that thing where it felt like snakes were having a mosh pit.
'Finally!' Chen called out. 'Marcus is being such a bull about the rematch. He keeps saying we got lucky last time.'
Marcus. The guy who'd somehow morphed from cute lab partner to someone who acted like every padel match was the NBA Finals. His intensity would've been impressive if it wasn't so extra.
The game started brutal. Marcus was smashing every ball like he had something to prove. Maya missed an easy volley and heard someone snicker. Her face burned.
'Water break!' Marcus called out, strutting to the fountain like he'd already won.
Maya leaned against the fence, watching the water cascade into her bottle. Chen sidled up beside her. 'He's doing that thing where he tries to intimidate everyone. It's so performative.'
'What if he's right though?' Maya whispered. 'Maybe last time was just luck.'
Chen looked at her like she'd grown three heads. 'Maya. You carried us through semifinals. I saw you. Don't let some guy with a fragile ego get in your head.'
Something shifted. Maybe it was Chen's faith in her, or the cool water hitting the back of her throat, or the realization that Marcus's posturing was just that — performance.
The next point, Marcus slammed a serve directly at her. Maya didn't flinch. She returned it cleanly, watching his smirk dissolve into surprise.
By match point, Maya's earlier nervousness had transformed into something sharp and bright. When Marcus's final return hit the net, she didn't cheer. She just walked to the net, shook his hand, and grabbed her water bottle.
'That bull energy you were talking about?' Maya told Chen later. 'I think he was the only one who believed it.'
Chen laughed. 'Girl, you were absolutely feral out there. I loved it.'
For the first time all day, Maya believed her.
