Water Balloons and Strikeouts
Maya's summer was supposed to be about proving herself at travel baseball tryouts, not about hiding in the bathroom while her phone blew up with texts she couldn't bring herself to read. The pressure weighed heavier than the backpack slumping against the stall door.
She'd barely stepped outside when chaos erupted—Jake's crew launching water balloons across the parking lot like they were in elementary school instead of high school. Maya scrambled backward, but it was too late. Drenched. Her carefully curated outfit—vintage oversized tee, cutoffs that hit just right—ruined. Laughter erupted around her, and suddenly she was the punchline again.
Then she saw it—a scrawny cat crouched under the bleachers, hissing at the chaos. Maya's heart cracked. She knew what it felt like to be small and cornered.
Without thinking, she crept closer, offering her palm. "Hey there, tiny warrior."
The cat inched forward, then pressed its forehead against her hand. And just like that, Maya wasn't the girl who'd gotten destroyed by water balloons. She was someone brave enough to approach something that might scratch her.
Jake appeared, wet hair plastered to his forehead, actually looking remorseful. "Yo, Maya, my bad. That was messed up."
"Yeah," she said, standing tall. "It was."
But she wasn't finished. "Check this out—this cat's been living under here all season. We should make it the team mascot."
And somehow, that became the thing. By the time baseball practice started, half the team was gathered around, someone had dubbed the cat "Baserunner," and Maya—the girl who'd wanted to disappear—was the one holding court, telling stories about her feline encounter, her clothes still damp but her confidence dry as a bone.
Some days you get knocked down. Other days, you find a cat under the bleachers and realize you're stronger than whatever tries to soak you.
