Waiting Room Green

Elena stood in her kitchen at 7:14 AM, watching her iPhone's screen pulse with the specialist's number. She'd been waiting three weeks for these biopsy results, long enough for the knot in her stomach to become a permanent fixture. Her smoothie - spinach, papaya, coconut water - sat untouched on the counter, vibrant green and deceptively cheerful. She'd made it because somewhere she'd read that leafy greens and tropical fruits could reduce inflammation, as if diet could possibly counteract whatever her cells were doing.

The phone stopped ringing. Voicemail.

"Miss Chen, this is Dr. Arisaka's office calling about your pathology report. Please give us a call back at your earliest convenience."

Her hands were shaking. She gripped the counter's edge until her knuckles turned white. This was it - the moment her life bifurcated into before and after. She thought about Sarah, how she'd promised they'd start trying for a baby in the spring. She thought about her mother, dead at forty-seven from the same thing Elena might have.

The spinach in her blender had seemed so virtuous that morning. Local, organic, washed carefully. She'd been doing everything right. That was the cruel joke, wasn't it? The universe didn't reward good behavior.

Her phone chimed again. Sarah texting: "Coffee later? Missing you." A yellow heart emoji followed.

Elena stared at the smoothie, now separated and slightly brownish at the edges. Perfect health in a glass, except it wasn't. Nothing was. She grabbed her keys, left the smoothie melting on the counter, and walked out into the gray dawn, her iPhone clutched in her hand like a weapon she didn't know how to use.
