Vitamin Water Confidence

Maya's hands shook as she stepped through the sliding glass door. The pool party noise hit her like a wall - laughter, music, the splash of bodies hitting water. She adjusted the oversized bucket hat over her curls, pulling it lower. Her safety blanket.

"Mayy-aaaa!" Sarah called from the pool, waving. "Get in!"

"In a minute!" Maya called back, voice tight. She headed straight for the kitchen, grabbing a Vitaminwater from the cooler like she belonged there. Like she wasn't the girl who'd spent freshman year invisible.

"Nice hat," someone said behind her.

She turned. It was Jay, the basketball captain, dripping pool water, shirt clinging to everything. Maya's brain short-circuited. "Thanks. It's... vintage."

"For real?" He grinned. "You've got style."

Maya almost dropped her vitamin-enhanced confidence in a bottle. This was it - her moment. No more hiding behind oversized hats and nervous laughter. Junior year was supposed to be different.

"Wanna play cornhole?" Jay asked. "We need another player."

"Yes!" she said too fast. "I mean, yeah, sure."

They moved to the patio. The hat slipped. She almost fixed it, then stopped. Let it be crooked. Let them see her face - the acne marks, the nervous smile, everything.

Her first throw sailed way off course.

"Rough start," Jay teased.

"Shut up," she laughed, and it was real. Not performing. Just laughing.

Someone bumped into her, splashing water from a solo cup onto her shirt. Maya gasped - instinctively reached to fix the hat - then stopped. She was wet. Her makeup was probably running. And she was... fine?

"You good?" Jay asked.

"Yeah," Maya said, and realized she meant it. "I'm good."

She took off the hat. Shook out her curls. Took a swig of her Vitaminwater like she owned the place. The water on her shirt dried into a dark patch, battle scar from her first real party.

Junior year was going to be different - not because she reinvented herself, but because she stopped hiding who she was.
