Vitamin Pyramid Scheme
Maya was running late—again. Her mom yelled from the kitchen, "Did you take your vitamin?" as Maya grabbed her backpack and bolted out the door.
"Yeah, totally!" Maya lied, sprinting toward the bus stop. The vitamin gummy sat untouched on her counter. Like she had time for wellness routines when her entire social life was crumbling.
At school, the cafeteria tables were arranged like some social pyramid, and Maya definitely occupied the bottom level. Meanwhile, Brianna and her friends sat at the top—untouchable, perfect, probably planning their next Instagram photo shoot.
"You look like you've seen a sphinx," her best friend Leo joked, sliding into the seat across from her. "What's with the face?"
Maya groaned. "Brianna's pyramid scheme against me continues. She 'accidentally' tagged me in that embarrassing photo from seventh grade."
Leo smirked. "Dude, that photo is iconic. Your braces era was a whole aesthetic."
"My braces era was a dark time," Maya muttered, resting her palm on her forehead. "Now half the softball team thinks it's funny to call me 'Metal Mouth.' Again."
"Okay, but hear me out," Leo said, leaning in. "What if we lean into it? Like, lean into the chaos. You can't control what Brianna does, but you can control your reaction."
Maya stared at him. "Since when did you become a philosopher?"
"Since I realized that running from embarrassing stuff just makes it worse," Leo said. "Remember when I tripped at homecoming? I owned it, and now people think I'm intentionally quirky. It's a whole vibe."
Maya considered this. Brianna's power came from Maya's shame. If Maya stopped being ashamed...
"You're weirdly smart," Maya said. "Fine. I'll take your stupid vitamin of wisdom and own it."
"Vitamin of wisdom?" Leo snorted. "That's not how supplements work, but I'll take it."
Later that day, when someone called her "Metal Mouth" in the hallway, Maya didn't shrink away. She flashed a grin and said, "Yeah, my orthodontist was basically an artist. Those braces were premium."
The guy blinked, confused. "Oh. Cool, I guess?"
Small victory. But maybe Leo was right—stop running, start owning it. The social pyramid wasn't going anywhere, but at least she could climb it on her own terms.
