Vitamin Kings and Queens
My mom's living room transformation into "Vitamin Wellness HQ" was officially the most embarrassing thing to happen since seventh period when my pants ripped doing a TikTok dance.
"Mia, taste this! It's the Blue Spirulina Blast!" Mom held out a glass of something that looked like pond water. "This could be YOUR college fund, honey. I signed you up as a Junior Wellness Ambassador!"
I stared at her. The pamphlets on the coffee table showed people standing on actual pyramids, their arms raised like they were summoning aliens. Apparently, this wasn't just a vitamin company—it was a LIFESTYLE. A pyramid-shaped lifestyle where you recruited your friends to sell vitamins below you while the people above you bought yachts.
"Mom, this is literally a pyramid scheme."
"It's NOT a pyramid scheme, Mia. It's NETWORK MARKETING. The pyramid represents success! Upward mobility!"
Meanwhile, Buster—our ancient, smelly pug mix—was aggressively sniffing the box of vitamin samples like his life depended on it. Then, with zero warning, he snatched a packet of "Immunity Booster Gummies" and bolted.
"BUSTER! NO!" I chased him through the house, sliding on the hardwood in my fuzzy socks. The dog that slept twenty-two hours a day suddenly had Olympic sprinter energy.
He wedged himself under my bed, the vitamin packet clamped in his teeth like prize.
"Give it, you little goblin!" I hissed, reaching under the bedframe. Buster growled. The dog that let toddlers dress him as a pumpkin was defending MLM vitamins with his life.
My phone buzzed. Group chat:
sarah_j: did u see jason's story?? he's at Emma's party 😭
chloe: bet he's with that sophomore from math team
me: EMERGENCY. my dog stole my mom's pyramid scheme vitamins and i'm currently bargaining with him under my bed
sarah_j: send pics
I stared at the texts. Here I was, fighting a pug over overpriced supplements while Jason was probably flirting with some sophomore who actually knew how to exist in social situations without crisis.
Buster finally released the vitamins, possibly sensing my despair. I crawled backward from under the bed, vitamin dust coating my nose, dog hair all over my hoodie.
Then my phone buzzed again. Jason: hey, saw u weren't at the party. everything cool?
Maybe life wasn't so different from this pyramid scheme after all—just layers of awkward moments leading somewhere uncertain. At least Buster was now my best friend, even if he did smell like old cheese and victory.
