Vitamin C Secret

Maya's fingers hovered over her phone screen. @peelthelayer had posted again - another mysteriously perfect photo of a perfectly peeled orange, arranged in impossibly aesthetic spirals.

"You're literally obsessing," Maya's best friend Sam said, dropping onto the cafeteria bench beside her. "It's just fruit."

"No, Sam. Look at the shadows. The lighting. This person's basically a food artist but also kinda... maybe stalking me?" Maya lowered her voice. "They always post my favorite things."

Sam rolled her eyes so hard it looked painful. "Or - hear me out - some people just like aesthetic fruit content. Not everything's about you."

But Maya wasn't convinced. That afternoon in chemistry, she spotted Jordan - the quiet transfer student who always sat in the back - meticulously arranging vitamin supplements on his desk in a pattern that looked weirdly familiar. An orange bottle. A white one. The same spiral formation.

Okay, now she had to investigate. For science.

She became the worst spy ever. In the hallway, she "accidentally" knocked into his backpack, sending supplements everywhere. Bright orange vitamin C bottles scattered across the linoleum.

"Sorry!" Maya dropped to her knees, helping him gather them. "I didn't know you took vitamins."

Jordan's face turned the exact shade of the orange bottles. "My mom... she's really into holistic stuff. Makes me take them every day."

"That's actually kinda nice?" Maya paused, her fingers brushing against the bottle he was reaching for. "My mom's always working. Barely notices if I eat actual food, let alone vitamins."

Jordan looked up, and for the first time, really looked at her. "Yeah? I thought... I thought you had, like, the perfect life. Everyone talks about how you're always so put-together."

Maya laughed bitterly. "Put-together? I've been convinced someone's spying on me because they post orange pictures I think are secret messages. That's not put-together. That's unhinged."

Jordan's eyes widened. "@peelthelayer? That's... that's my account."

They stared at each other.

"You're the orange spiral person?"

"You thought I was spying on you?"

Then Jordan started laughing - this genuine, surprising sound that made Maya smile despite herself. "My little sister has leukemia," he said suddenly. "The oranges are for her. She can't eat solid food sometimes, but she loves looking at beautiful fruit arrangements. I started posting them to cheer her up."

Maya felt like she'd been punched in the chest. "Oh."

"Yeah. The vitamins are for her immune system too." He shrugged. "But you thought..."

"That the world revolved around me," Maya finished. "I'm literally the most bull-headed person alive."

"Nah." Jordan grinned, standing up and offering her a hand. "You're just observant. But maybe next time? Just ask."

That night, Maya got a notification. @peelthelayer had posted a new photo: a single orange, half-peeled, captioned "For the girl who's brave enough to ask questions."

She didn't follow him. She didn't need to. Sometimes the best connections aren't made from a distance. They happen when you stop being a spy in your own life and start actually living it.
