Unplugged Perfect

Maya's room looked like a cable explosion. Three different chargers snaked across her floor like lazy worms, all leading to the same dead iphone on her bed. "You've got to be kidding me," she groaned, shaking her phone like that would magically resurrect it.

Her golden retriever Max raised his head from his pillow position, thumping his tail once in solidarity before going back to sleep.

"Thanks for the help, bud," Maya muttered.

In twenty minutes, she was supposed to be on Jordan's live stream. The Jordan. Who'd somehow amassed 50K followers doing nothing except being devastatingly cute and reviewing local coffee shops. He'd DM'd her yesterday—actually DM'd her—asking if she wanted to collab on a "day in the life" video.

Her hands were literally shaking.

She'd spent two hours on her hair this morning. Natural curls transformed into perfect beach waves that fell just right. Now she looked in the mirror and all she saw was someone trying too hard. Why was her hair always either frizz city or helmet head? There was no in-between.

Maya grabbed her backup cable from the drawer. Ancient, fraying, the kind her mom called "a fire hazard." But it worked, sort of. She sat on the edge of her bed, Max's warm weight pressing against her leg, watching the battery percentage creep up: 3%... 4%... 5%...

Her phone chimed. Jordan's name lit up the screen.

"Hey! You ready?" His voice was exactly like his videos—warm, effortless, like this whole thing was no big deal.

"Almost! Just, uh, technical difficulties." Why did she sound so breathless? She cleared her throat. "Five minutes."

"No stress. Take your time. Max with you?"

"Yeah, he's helping. Moral support."

Jordan laughed. "Perfect. My dog's asleep on my feet too. It's a theme."

Maya stared at her reflection. The perfect hair. The carefully planned outfit. The fake-casual background setup. What was she doing?

She reached for the cable—and yanked it out.

The phone died.

Max's ears perked up. He looked at her with those dopey golden eyes, head tilted, like what's the problem, human?

"You know what?" Maya said aloud. "You're right."

Her iphone was just a brick on her bed now. No filters. No angles. No performance.

She grabbed her house keys off the desk. "Wanna go for a walk, buddy?"

Max was up in a nanosecond, doing that full-body wiggle dance that only dogs can pull off.

They walked for an hour. No phone. No hair checks. No practicing what she'd say. Just Max trotting ahead, investigating every single interesting smell on the block, while Maya actually looked at the world instead of through a screen.

When she got back, her phone powered on to Jordan's text: "Hope everything's okay! Maybe tomorrow?"

Maya's fingers hovered over the keyboard. Then she typed: "Actually, yeah. But can we do it outside? No filters. Just real life?"

Three dots appeared. Then: "That would be sick. See you at the park at 4?"

Maya grinned. Max woofed like he understood everything.

"We're going, aren't we?" she asked him. "And I'm not even gonna fix my hair first."
