Undercurrents
Elena adjusted the brim of her sun hat, pulling it lower until her eyes disappeared in shadow. At forty-nine, she'd learned that disappearance was its own kind of power. Her hair—once chestnut and impossibly thick—was now something she scheduled into her calendar: color appointments every six weeks, precise and expensive as mortgage payments.
She watched from the chaise lounge as her target cut through the hotel pool's turquoise water. Sebastian swam with the methodical grace of a man who'd never had to fight for anything. His arms rose and fell, each stroke smooth as silk. Elena was supposed to be documenting his movements, gathering evidence of corporate espionage. That's what they paid her for: to be the invisible woman, the spy who moved through rooms like dust.
But her mind kept returning to Marcus's voice on the phone that morning. "I can't do this anymore, El. The secrets." Twenty years of marriage, and somehow she'd become the person she hunted.
A woman joined Sebastian at the pool's edge. Younger, with hair that fell down her back like dark water. Elena's fingers tightened around her phone. She should capture this. Any connection, any vulnerability—these were the currencies of her trade. Instead she watched the way the woman touched Sebastian's shoulder, casual and intimate as breathing.
Sebastian laughed. His wet hair plastered against his forehead. He looked unguarded in a way Elena hadn't allowed herself to be in decades.
Her phone buzzed. Marcus again.
Elena stood up, leaving her phone on the chaise. The pool's surface caught the afternoon light, blinding and beautiful. She thought of the word swimming—how it meant both movement and surrender. She'd spent half a lifetime learning how not to surrender.
Sebastian noticed her then. Their eyes met across the water. In his expression she saw something she recognized: the exhaustion of constant performance. The spy and the spied-upon, both prisoners of the same invisible room.
She pushed her hat back and let him see her face. Just a woman, aging and visible at last.
