Undercover Fruit

hatpapayaspy

Maya's beat-up gray beanie was basically attached to her head at this point. Freshman year was already stressful enough without accidentally making eye contact with anyone in the cafeteria, so the hat stayed on—partially for the aesthetic, mostly for the tactical advantage of hiding behind it when needed.

She'd perfected the art of the casual spy mission. Sitting at her usual corner table with her nose buried in a book, she'd covertly observe the popular crowd. They were like a different species, all effortless hair and inside jokes that rippled through their table like waves. Sometimes she took mental notes: how Jayla always laughed with her whole body, how Riley's AirPods were basically permanent fixtures, how they all moved like they were in a music video Maya hadn't been invited to audition for.

"You know you're literally staring, right?"

Maya practically jumped out of her skin. It was Chloe, from her history class, sliding into the seat across from her like she'd been invited.

"I was not staring," Maya lied, pulling her beanie lower. "I was... studying. Social observation. For... reasons."

Chloe raised an eyebrow, then reached into her bag and pulled out the weirdest thing Maya had ever seen in a school cafeteria. A papaya. A whole one, sliced into wedges like it was the most normal lunch ever.

"Want one?" Chloe pushed the container forward. "My mom's obsessed with exotic fruit phase. It's actually lowkey fire once you get past the weird texture."

Maya hesitated. This wasn't in her freshman survival guide—eating tropical fruit with a girl she'd barely spoken to while simultaneously failing at being undercover.

But she was already suspicious as hell. Why was Chloe sitting here? Why the sudden generosity with the papaya situation? Was this some kind of popular kid psychological experiment?

"Why are you really here?" Maya asked, pulling the hat brim down to cover her eyes. "Is this a dare? Did Jayla put you up to this?"

Chloe actually laughed, and it sounded genuine. "Bro, I'm just trying to make a friend. Plus, I see you over here every day acting like you're conducting actual spy operations when you're just awkwardly observing humanity. It's kinda bold, honestly."

Maya slowly peeled the hat from her eyes. Something in Chloe's expression felt real—no judgment, no hidden agenda. Just a girl with papaya offering an olive branch.

She took a wedge. It was sweet and soft and nothing like she expected.

"Okay," Maya admitted, "this isn't terrible."

"High praise," Chloe grinned. "So, what's the deal with the hat? You part of some underground spy organization, or just committed to the bit?"

Maya smiled—for real this time. "Both. Obviously."
