Undercover at the Lunch Table
Maya pulled her beanie **hat** down lower, fringe crushed against her forehead. Bad **hair** days were basically a personality trait at this point, but today was next level. She'd spent forty minutes trying to fix whatever chaos had erupted on her head overnight, only to end up shoving it all under olive green cotton.
She felt like a total **spy** at her own lunch table, quietly observing while everyone else lived their best lives. Chloe was aggressively waving her hands while telling some story about weekend drama. "—and then he literally said—"
Maya tuned her out, scrolling through her phone instead. Fake laughing was exhausting.
"Hey, you okay?"
She jumped. Kai from her history class was standing there, which was weird because they'd literally never spoken outside of group projects. His brown eyes were actually concerned, which was worse.
"Yeah, totally fine," Maya said, too fast.
"You look kinda..." He gesture toward his own head. "Everything good?"
Her face heated up. So her bad hair day was visible even through the hat. Cool. This is exactly what her sixteen-year-old self needed.
"Honestly? No." She sighed, and something about his genuine expression made her add, "My hair's doing something unhinged today."
Kai laughed, and it wasn't mean. "Dude, same. Mine's been two different textures since I woke up late and had to air dry."
Maya blinked. Hot Kai from history class had hair problems?
"Show me," she challenged, before she could overthink it.
He pulled off his hoodie, revealing genuinely chaotic curls sticking up in seven directions. Maya laughed for real this time.
"Okay, you win." She hesitated, then pulled off her hat. Her **hair** poofed out in all its glory—half-flat, half-frizz, definitely not Instagram-ready.
Kai didn't even react. "Honestly? It looks fine. You're good."
He held out his hand, **palm** up. "I'm Kai, by the way. Official Hair Struggle Buddy."
Maya high-fived him. "Maya. And yes, that's our official title now."
Chloe stopped mid-story. "Wait, are you two—"
"No," Maya said automatically.
"Maybe," Kai said at the same time.
They looked at each other. Maya smiled, really smiled, for the first time all day. Maybe this lunch table wouldn't be so bad after all.
