Undercover at the Deep End
The pool party at Jessica's house was supposed to be the event of the summer, but I spent the first hour strategically positioning myself behind a potted palm tree. My dad's oversized fedora — part of his questionable vintage phase — was pulled low over my face. The hat wasn't a fashion statement. It was camouflage.
"You look ridiculous," Maya said, appearing beside me with two sodas. "Also, Tyler's been asking about you."
"I'm on a mission," I whispered, adjusting the brim. "I need you to be my friend right now, not my co-conspirator, but seriously — distract him."
Maya rolled her eyes but headed toward the snack table, where Tyler was definitely not casually leaning against the patio umbrella.
Here's the thing about being fifteen: your entire social life can implode in thirty seconds flat. Last week, I'd accidentally liked a three-year-old Instagram post from Tyler's ex — while showing my phone to his current crush. Now I was effectively a social pariah, operating in the shadows.
I was basically a spy at my own grade's pool party. My objective: determine how much damage control was necessary without making direct contact. My intel: Tyler had told three people I was "acting weird," and his new girlfriend thought I was "sketchy."
"Yo, Fedora!" someone shouted. "Marco!"
The entire pool area erupted in "POLLO!" — because apparently that was the joke now.
My face burned under the hat. This was it. The moment my social standing officially flatlined. I considered making a break for the gate, claiming I heard my mom calling.
Then Maya splashed into the pool, cannonballing right next to Tyler, soaking him completely.
"Oops," she said, grinning. "Hey everyone, guess what? Alexa didn't actually do anything. Tyler's just mad because she wouldn't help him cheat on his history final, and now he's spinning stories."
Silence. Then, from somewhere in the deeper end: "Wait, YOU asked ME for the answers!"
The tide turned. Suddenly, I wasn't the sketchy friend anymore. Tyler was. And the hat? Yeah, I took it off. Some undercover missions end in extraction. Mine ended with a push into the shallow end, fully clothed, surrounded by people who finally had the full story.
Being fifteen is complicated. But having friends who'll cannonball the truth? That's the deep end worth diving into.
