Undercover at Lunch

Maya felt like a total spy every day at lunch—observing from her corner table, watching the popular kids like she was gathering intel for a mission. Her iPhone burned in her pocket, her lifeline to the group chat where her real friends existed beyond these cafeteria walls.

"Hey, you coming to padel today?" Jake asked, sliding into the seat across from her. Jake, who somehow managed to be on varsity everything while maintaining perfect grades and still looking like he walked out of a TikTok feed.

Maya's stomach did that annoying flip thing. "Maybe? I have to—"

"You should. Everyone's going. It's, like, the new thing." His phone buzzed. He didn't check it. Of course he didn't.

She nodded, trying to look chill even though her palms were sweating. Padel had exploded at their school overnight—one day nobody knew what it was, the next day you were basically social suicide if you didn't play.

"Awesome." He flashed that smile that made half the sophomore class swoon. "See you there."

Maya watched him walk back to his table, already surrounded by people laughing at something she wasn't part of. She pulled out her iPhone, scrolling through notifications like they could save her from feeling so small.

Her reflection in the dark screen stopped her cold. Right there. In her teeth. A massive, bright green piece of spinach from lunch.

How long had she been sitting there talking to Jake with spinach in her teeth while he was being all, like, 'You should come to padel'?

She wanted to die. Actually die. Right there at the corner table.

Maya shoved her phone in her pocket and rushed to the bathroom, heart pounding. Inside, she scrubbed her teeth until her gums hurt, staring at herself in the mirror. So what if she had spinach in her teeth? So what if she wasn't naturally part of the cool crowd? So what if she was learning padel because she wanted to fit in?

Her phone buzzed. A text from her real friends: Movie night?? Bring snacks!!

Maya smiled at her reflection. Spinach or not, she had people who liked her exactly as she was. And if she wanted to try padel, she'd do it for herself—not because Jake said everyone was doing it.

Still. She'd definitely check her teeth before talking to anyone tomorrow.
