Under The Hat

Maya's vintage baseball hat wasn't just an accessory—it was her armor. Every morning she'd pull the faded navy cap low over her eyes, like maybe if she hid enough of herself, people would stop asking what she was doing with her life.

"You joining the team this year?" Jake asked at lunch, his varsity jacket practically screaming popular kid energy.

"Uh, maybe," Maya lied, shoving fries into her mouth to avoid talking. The truth was, she'd been secretly running to the community pool every morning at 5 AM, swimming laps until her arms burned, because the water was the only place where her brain actually shut up for five seconds.

But nobody knew that. Nobody knew that the girl who showed up to school slightly damp every day was falling in love with swimming, terrified that if she admitted it, people would think she was weird for starting at seventeen when everyone else had been swimming since they were basically fetuses.

Friday night, Tanya's pool party. Maya stood by the edge, fully clothed, clutching her baseball hat like a lifeline.

"You coming in?" someone called.

"Nah, I'm good."

"You always wear that hat," Jake said, suddenly beside her. "Even in summer."

Maya's heart hammered. She could keep hiding, keep running from the thing that actually made her feel alive. Or she could just...

She pulled off the hat. Her wet hair sprang free, still damp from that morning's secret swim session.

"I swim," she said, voice shaking. "Every morning. I'm trying to make it worth something even though I started late."

Jake stared. Then grinned. "No way. We need a new relay team member. Brittney's moving next week."

The baseball hat floated away on the water's surface as Maya dove in, finally, into exactly who she was meant to be.
