Tropical Panic at Table 4
The papaya sat on my plate like a radioactive alien egg, its orange flesh gleaming under the café lights. I poked it with my fork, willing it to disappear, but no such luck.
"Try it," Maya said from across the table, her phone angled perfectly for the Instagram story she was filming. "It's literally exploding right now on TikTok. Everyone's doing the papaya challenge."
I glanced at my iPhone, currently blowing up with texts from the group chat. Where ARE you? The table by the window. ERIN'S HERE.
This was supposed to be my moment. Finally hanging with the popular crowd, finally being seen as someone interesting. Someone who wasn't just the quiet Vietnamese girl who spent Friday nights studying. But here I was, about to humiliation-viral myself because I couldn't even be cool about a fruit.
"I've never had papaya," I admitted, my face heating up.
The table went silent. Even Maya stopped filming.
"Never?" Erin asked, like I'd just said I'd never seen a dog. "It's, like, basic."
I thought about the papayas my grandmother grew in her garden back in Vietnam, how she'd slice them for breakfast while the sun came up orange through the windows. How I'd refused to eat them because I wanted normal kid food like cereal and toast. How I'd spent years rejecting everything that made me different, only to end up here—pretending to be someone I wasn't, surrounded by people who'd never understand the real me anyway.
My iPhone buzzed again. Grandma calling.
"You know what?" I said, picking up the papaya slice with my fingers. "My bà ngoại grows these. She taught me the best way to eat them is with a little lime and chili."
I took a bite. The sweetness hit first, then something deeper, earthier. Not like anything these girls had tasted in their sanitized, TikTok-approved world.
"That's actually kinda fire," Erin admitted.
"Told you," Maya said, phone back up, recording again. "Van's got flavor."
I smiled, really smiled, and dialed my grandmother back on my way home. Some things don't need a filter to be perfect.
