Tropical Decays

The papaya sat untouched on her breakfast plate, its flesh the color of a fresh bruise. Elena watched it soften in the Mexican sun, much like everything else in her life lately.

"You're not eating," David said, not looking up from his phone. His straw hat—ridiculous, affected—cast a shadow over his eyes. She'd bought it for him yesterday, hoping it might make him look like someone else. Someone who hadn't been sleeping with his assistant for six months.

"Not hungry."

They were supposed to be rekindling something at this resort. That was the brochure's promise: turquoise water, white sand, the chance to remember why they'd said yes. But Elena had found the text messages three days before the trip, and now every touch felt like a violation.

She stood up, chair scraping against the stone patio. "I'm going for a walk."

"Elena—"

"Don't." The word came out sharper than she'd intended. Or maybe exactly as sharp as she'd intended.

She walked to the ocean's edge, where the water lapped at her ankles. She'd always loved the ocean's indifference. It didn't care about your broken heart or your mortgage or your husband's betrayal. It just kept moving.

That's when she saw it—a fox, sleek and impossible, emerging from the resort's gardens. It moved with that predatory grace, stopping to stare at her with eyes that seemed to know everything. Foxes didn't belong on Mexican beaches. But there it was, orange coat burning against the blue sky, wild and out of place and breathtaking.

It felt like an omen. Or maybe just the universe's way of saying: *nothing makes sense, darling. Roll with it.*

She laughed, the sound ugly and genuine. When was the last time she'd laughed?

Back at the table, David was still scrolling. She sat down across from him, took his hand. He looked up, surprised.

"I want a divorce," she said.

The papaya continued its slow, patient collapse in the heat. Somewhere beyond them, the fox slipped back into the garden, invisible and alive and entirely free.
