Thunderpool Incident

Maya dragged herself through third period like a zombie, still recovering from yesterday's baseball tournament in ninety-degree heat. Her phone buzzed in her pocket—Jake's pool party, tonight. The mere thought made her palms sweat.

"You going?" Chloe asked at lunch, poking at her salad. "Everyone's gonna be there."

Maya pushed spinach around her plate. "I don't know. My swimming skills are... tragic."

"So what? Jake won't care. He thinks you're cute." Chloe wiggled her eyebrows.

Maya's stomach did that fluttery thing. Jake—captain of the baseball team, human ray of sunshine, somehow interested in her despite her ability to trip over nothing.

That evening, she stood at the edge of Jake's pool, heart hammering. Everyone else was already in the water, laughing and splashing. Even the couple of geeks from chemistry were cannonballing like they owned the place.

Then she saw Jake. He swam over, water droplets gleaming on his shoulders. "Hey! You made it."

She nodded, suddenly unable to form words.

"Come on in," he said, splashing water toward her playfully. "It's not that bad. I promise not to splash you. Too much."

Before she could respond, lightning cracked across the sky. Everyone gasped as the pool lights flickered.

"We should probably get out," Jake's mom called from the patio. "Storm's coming fast."

Thunder rattled the deck chairs. Jake climbed out and reached for Maya's hand to help her—except she'd frozen. She'd been so caught up in his smile, in the moment, in his actual hand touching hers, that she'd forgotten to be terrified of the pool.

"You okay?" he asked, genuine concern in his eyes.

She nodded, breathless. And for the first time, she wasn't just the anxious girl who couldn't swim. She was the girl Jake liked. The girl who could maybe, possibly, be brave.

"Race you inside," she said, surprising herself.

Jake laughed. "You're on."

They ran through the warm summer rain as the storm broke overhead, and Maya thought maybe sometimes, just sometimes, life gave you lightning moments that changed everything.
