Thunderpool Awakening

Maya stood at the edge of the pool party, feeling like a total zombie. Three hours of forced smiles, awkward small talk, and watching everyone pretend to be having the time of their lives. The backyard glowed with those string lights that are literally everywhere on TikTok, and someone was playing that same song for the fifth time.

"You look like you're about to dissociate into another dimension," said JP, sliding up beside her with two sodas. "Wanna bail?"

Maya snorted. "You read my mind."

JP was her oldest friend, the one who'd seen her through the braces phase, the bad haircut era, and that time she tried to become a TikTok dancer and accidentally kicked a hole in the wall. He got it.

They ended up on the dock behind his house, feet dangling in the water. The lake reflected the distant storm clouds rolling in—purple and bruised-looking against the darkening sky.

"Senior year's gonna be weird without everyone here," Maya said, watching the water ripple around her ankles. "Like, who are we even? Without all the—"

"Performance?" JP finished. "Yeah."

A flash of lightning cracked across the horizon, illuminating everything in stark white. For a second, it felt like the world had paused.

"You know what's funny?" JP said. "Everyone's so busy trying to be interesting that they forget how to be real."

Maya looked at him. "Since when did you get philosophical?"

"Since I realized my best friend was standing at a party for three hours looking like she'd rather be literally anywhere else."

She laughed. It felt good—real, not performed.

Another flash of lightning, closer this time. The water went silver, then dark again.

"We should probably go," she said. "Storm's coming in."

"Yeah," JP said, standing up and offering her a hand. "But hey—thanks for actually existing tonight. Instead of just zombie-ing through it."

"Same," she said, and meant it.

They ran back to the house as the first drops hit, laughing and soaked, leaving the fake party behind them.
