Thunderpaws Connection
Marcus lived his life in the background. AV club, stage crew, the guy you flagged down when the projector died during third period. He preferred it that way. Visible was terrifying.
Until the day Lightning Finnegan—the school's golden boy, track star, and Marcus's crush since forever—cornered him by the gymnasium entrance.
"Yo, Marcus! You do that whole tech setup thing, right? House party tonight, parents out of town. Need someone to run the sound system. I'll pay you fifty bucks."
Marcus's brain short-circuited. Lightning. Finnegan. Talking to him.
"Uh, sure?"
"Sick. Be there at eight. And don't be weird about it." Finnegan's grin was unfairly dazzling. "Just saying, I've seen you around. You seem cool. For an AV kid."
Marcus spent hours debating outfit choices. His cat, Barnaby, judged him from the bed, tail flicking with feline superiority. Marcus settled on his best hoodie—not too formal, not too try-hard.
The party was already chaotic when he arrived. He found the setup in the basement: tangles of speaker cable everywhere, a disaster waiting to happen. Someone had clearly tried to DIY this and failed spectacularly.
"You made it!" Finnegan appeared, red cup in hand, breath smelling like cheap punch and recklessness. "Thanks for coming, really. Everyone said I was crazy for hiring you, but I remembered how you fixed that whole homecoming assembly situation."
Marcus froze. Finnegan remembered?
"No problem," he managed, kneeling to untangle the cable mess. His fingers shook.
"You want a drink?"
"I'm—working."
"Right. Responsible." Finnegan leaned against the wall, watching him. "You know, nobody ever notices the guys who make everything work. Like, literally make it possible for everyone else to have fun. That's kind of badass."
Marcus's heart did something illegal. He was running through worst-case scenarios when Barnaby—his ACTUAL CAT, who'd somehow escaped his apartment—came tearing down the stairs, straight through the basement door, and directly into the tangle of cable at Marcus's feet.
The whole system crashed. Silence swept through the party above.
Marcus realized he was on his ass, Barnaby purring triumphantly on his chest, Lightning Finnegan laughing so hard he spilled his drink.
"Your cat just killed the vibe!" Finnegan gasped. "That is literally the most metal thing that's ever happened at one of my parties."
Marcus started laughing too. Couldn't stop. The terror, the absurdity, the way Finnegan was looking at him like he was genuinely interesting.
"Help me catch him?" Marcus asked.
"Yeah," Finnegan said, and for a second, something electric passed between them. "Yeah, absolutely."
They never did get the music working again. But Marcus found himself in the backyard at midnight, sitting next to Lightning Finnegan on the patio furniture, sharing stolen pizza and talking about everything and nothing, while Barnaby slept across both their laps.
Some nights, he decided, you don't need to be in the spotlight. You just need to be sitting next to the right person in the dark.
