Thunderfox Courtside

Maya's first mistake was letting herself get talked into joining the summer padel league. Her second mistake was developing a massive crush on Fox, the mysterious player with the lazy smile and lightning-fast reflexes who dominated court three every Tuesday.

"You're literally spying on her again," Liam whispered, elbowing Maya as she pretended to check her phone while watching Fox stretch by the wall. "It's been two months, Maya. Either talk to her or move on."

Maya rolled her eyes. "I'm not spying. I'm observing. There's a difference."

"There's really not."

Fox was everything Maya wasn't—confident, out, effortlessly athletic. While Maya was still figuring out how to exist in her own skin, Fox moved like she'd already solved every mystery the universe could throw at her. The way she'd laugh with her teammates, the casual way she leaned into girls' personal space, the absolute certainty of who she was. It made Maya's chest ache with something between envy and want.

That afternoon, the sky turned ominous. Thunder rumbled in the distance as the league director announced a weather delay. Everyone scattered toward the covered area—everyone except Fox, who stood at the edge of the courts watching a real fox dart along the perimeter fence.

Maya hesitated, then walked over. "Cool, right?"

Fox jumped like she'd been shocked. "Oh! Yeah. I've been trying to get a picture all summer." She turned, and for the first time, she really looked at Maya. "You're court four, right? I'm Fox."

"I know." Maya's face burned. "I mean—I'm Maya."

"I know who you are." Fox's smile was different up close—softer, almost shy. "You've got a killer backhand. I've been, uh, observing."

Lightning cracked the sky open, illuminating Fox's surprised expression as they both started laughing. The rain began to fall in sheets, and they didn't run for cover. They stood there watching each other through the downpour, two spies finally dropping their cover.

"So," Maya said over the thunder, her heart hammering harder than the storm. "You want to maybe get food after this?"

Fox's grin was lightning-bright. "I thought you'd never ask."
