Thundercourt Confessions

Maya's text lit up my screen at 11:47 PM: *tennis courts. midnight. come alone.*

My heart did that stupid flutter thing it always did when she messaged. Which was ridiculous, because Maya Reyes was way out of my league - varsity soccer, perfect Instagram feed, somehow made sweatbands look intentional. Meanwhile, my biggest athletic achievement was carrying my saxophone up three flights of stairs without wheezing.

The courts were behind the community center, dark except for the security light. When I rounded the corner, though, she wasn't alone. Three people stood there: Maya, this sophomore Jason who ran the D&D club, and some girl I didn't recognize.

"You came," Maya said, grinning. "Perfect. We're playing padel."

"What."

"Padel. It's like tennis but cooler." She tossed me a racket. "You're partnered with Chloe."

Chloe - the girl I didn't recognize - waved. She had this messy bun and glasses that kept sliding down her nose. "Hi. I'm terrible at sports, just so you know."

"Same," I said, feeling weirdly better.

So there we were at midnight, four random teens playing a sport I didn't know existed, under this security light that made everything look washed-out and mysterious. Jason kept missing the ball because his glasses kept fogging up. Chloe and I accidentally invented our own secret language - "spinach" meant "I'm open" (don't ask, it just happened) - and somehow we were winning.

Then the sky opened up.

Lightning cracked so close I swear my hair stood up. Rain dumped down like someone overturned the ocean, and we all scrambled for the covered area by the courts, slipping and laughing like maniacs.

Maya's perfect curls were dripping. Jason's glasses were completely useless. Chloe and I stood there soaked, and she leaned in close, pretending to strategize but really just giggling about how ridiculous this all was.

"Are you spying on us?" she whispered, nodding toward Maya and Jason, who were having this intense-looking conversation by the wall.

"Maybe," I whispered back. "You think they planned this?"

"Oh 100%," Chloe said. "Maya's been talking about you for weeks."

My stomach did a whole gymnastics routine. "She what now?"

Before I could panic further, another lightning strike illuminated the courts. In that split second, I saw it: spray paint on the back fence. *SPY CLUB MEETS HERE.* With little lightning bolts around it.

"Wait," I said. "You guys do this every week?"

"Every Tuesday," Chloe said, squeezing water out of her ponytail. "We're not very good at the whole 'secret society' thing."

Maya appeared behind us, wiping rain off her face. "You coming back next week? Or was getting beat by a first-time padel player too humiliating?"

I looked at Chloe, who winked at me. At Jason, who'd given up on his glasses entirely. At Maya, standing there with rain dripping off her eyelashes, waiting for my answer like it actually mattered.

"I'll be here," I said. "But I'm bringing snacks. And maybe better shoes."

"Deal," Maya said. And the way she smiled at me made me think maybe, just maybe, I wasn't as invisible as I'd always thought.

The walk home took fifteen minutes. My socks squished the whole way. My phone buzzed with a group chat notification: *SPY CLUB* - Maya, Jason, Chloe, and me.

I'd never been so happy to be completely soaked in my entire life.
