Thunder Pool & Truth or Dare

Maya's hands wouldn't stop shaking, and she blamed it on the icy water of the Hendersons' pool. Everyone else was splashing around like this was just another Friday night, like the most popular guy in sophomore year wasn't currently staring at her from across the water.

"You doing okay?" Liam asked, swimming up beside her. His hair was wet, and Maya's brain short-circuited.

"Yeah. Just. Cold."

"Smooth, Maya. Real smooth," she thought.

Thunder rumbled in the distance. Mrs. Henderson poked her head out the back door. "Storm's coming in, kids! Everyone inside!"

The group groaned but started climbing out. Maya hesitated. The water felt safer than what came next — the part where she had to exist in the same room as Liam without her face doing something embarrassing.

That's when she noticed it — a small calico cat perched on the pool fence, tail twitching, watching her with what looked suspiciously like judgment.

"You too?" Maya whispered. "Think I'm awkward?"

The cat meowed.

A brilliant flash of lightning illuminated the entire backyard, and suddenly Maya wasn't alone in the pool anymore. Liam had slipped back into the water.

"Forgot my phone," he said, though his phone was clearly on the table. "Hey, Maya?"

"Yeah?"

"I was gonna ask you something before the storm interrupted."

Maya's heart hammered against her ribs. The cat on the fence leaned forward like it was watching the season finale.

"Do you want to come to the fall dance with me?"

Lightning struck again, closer this time, and the backyard went white. In that moment, Maya saw something she hadn't expected — Liam looked nervous too. His hands were shaking.

She laughed, a genuine sound that surprised even herself. "Yes. Obviously."

The cat on the fence dipped its head like it approved.

"Cool," Liam said, and his smile was worth every terrifying second. "Cool. We should probably go inside though. Before we get electrocuted."

"Good plan."

They climbed out together, and Maya finally stopped shaking. The storm outside was just getting started, but the one in her chest had passed. She glanced back at the cat one last time. It winked. Maya decided to count it as a win.
