Thunder Pool Party
The pool party was supposed to be chill, but Maya's stomach was doing backflips. She stood by the edge in her new bikini, feeling like a total zombie after staying up until 3 AM overthinking every possible social scenario.
"You gonna swim or just stand there looking like a deer in headlights?" Jordan called from the water, splashing water her way. His friends laughed. Maya's face burned.
Then she saw her—Chloe, the girl who'd been ghosting her for two weeks, lounging under a palm tree with her squad, acting like nothing had happened. Maya's chest tightened.
A crack of thunder made everyone jump. The sky, previously perfect blue, had turned an ominous purple-gray.
"Everyone out!" Chloe's mom yelled from the patio. "Storm's coming fast!"
Lightning flashed across the sky, followed immediately by thunder that shook the ground. Rain started dumping down in sheets.
Maya scrambled for her towel, but someone had already grabbed it. Of course. She stood there dripping, exposed, while everyone else raced toward the house. She felt ridiculous.
Then Jordan was there, handing her his towel. "You good?"
Their eyes met for a second too long. Maya felt something electric that had nothing to do with the storm.
"Yeah," she managed. "Thanks."
"The lightning's kinda sick though," Jordan said, gesturing at the sky where another bolt split the darkness. "Nature going full main character energy."
Maya laughed. She looked over at Chloe, still under the palm tree, now getting absolutely soaked.
"You know what?" Maya said, feeling suddenly bold. "Forget it." She stepped out into the rain, letting it plaster her hair to her face.
Jordan grinned and joined her. They stood there as the storm raged, everything else fading away. For the first time all night, Maya didn't feel like a zombie going through the motions. She felt awake.
