Thunder on the Padel Court

When your best friend Dani convinces you to join the new padel club because 'it's giving tennis vibes but lowkey cooler,' you don't expect to show up wearing your grandma's ridiculous crochet hat because your hair was doing That Thing again. The one where it defies physics and social norms simultaneously.

The padel court buzzes with energy—teens in matching outfits, parents who look like they stepped out of an Athleta catalog, and that one guy. Matteo. Who somehow made varsity everything and still has time to look effortlessly perfect while destroying everyone at what you thought was just tennis with walls.

'I'm not doing this,' you whisper, but Dani's already dragging you toward the court. 'You're being dramatic. It's fine.'

Then you see it—THE bear. Someone brought their golden retriever puppy wearing a tiny bear costume because 'it's ironic,' and the whole thing's giving TikTok content farm but in real life. The bear-costumed puppy is running circles around Matteo's feet, and he's laughing, and your stomach does that thing where it forgets how to anatomy.

Lightning cracks outside—actual summer storm lightning, illuminating the entire court through the skylights. Everyone oohs. Power flickers. For three seconds, it's just you, Matteo, and the ridiculous bear puppy all looking at each other in the sudden darkness.

'Nice hat,' he says when the lights buzz back on. And you think he's roasting you, but then he smiles and it's genuinely amused. 'My sister made me wear her merch last week. I feel you.'

You're suddenly highkey glad you kept the stupid hat on.

The padel game is a disaster—you swing at air, trip over your own feet, and somehow hit the ball into the ceiling twice—but Matteo keeps calling you 'Thunder' because 'you play like you're conducting a storm out there,' and the bear puppy keeps bringing the ball back to you like you're its favorite human, and Dani is losing it laughing so hard she can't serve.

Later, Matteo asks for your Insta. 'For padel tips,' he says, but the way his ears turn pink says something else entirely.

You walk home in the rain, crochet hat somehow still on your head, thunder rumbling in the distance, and realize: sometimes the embarrassing moments become your origin story. Sometimes showing up as your awkward, ridiculous, lightning-struck self is exactly how you find your people.

Or at least, how you get a text from Matteo saying 'same time next week, Thunder?'

No cap: best worst day ever.
