Thunder on the Court
Maya adjusted her padel racket, palms sweating as she watched Lucas laugh with his friends across the court. This was her chance to finally talk to him—the guy who'd been the subject of her late-night Instagram stalking sessions for months. Her parents thought she was just researching for a school project, but really she'd become a total spy, memorizing his coffee orders and knowing his dog's name better than her own homework assignments.
"You ready?" Lucas called, jogging over. His hair was damp from practice, and Maya's stomach did that fluttery thing that was equal parts excitement and terror.
"Yeah, totally," she lied. In reality, she'd spent breakfast arguing with her mom about taking those gross vitamin D gummies. "You need them for your immune system, Maya," her mom had said, while Maya was busy stressing about whether Lucas would think her serve was pathetic.
The sky darkened faster than Maya's confidence. Storm clouds gathered like something out of a movie, all dramatic and moody. Then it happened—a crack of lightning that split the sky in half, illuminating everything in this weird, electric blue flash.
In that split second, Maya saw Lucas differently. Not as this perfect, untouchable guy she'd built up in her head. Just a person. Someone who probably stressed about things too. Someone real.
"We should probably get inside," Lucas said, grabbing his bag. "Hey, you want to hang out at the café while we wait this out?"
Maya's heart raced faster than any storm. "Yeah. I'd like that."
As they ran toward the covered walkway, she realized she didn't need to spy from behind screens anymore. She could just exist, talk, be present. The vitamins could wait. The Instagram stalking could stop. Sometimes the most terrifying moments were also the ones where everything finally clicked into place.
Another lightning flash, another chance to begin.
