Thunder In The Water
The pool deck glowed orange from those hideous vintage lights Coach refused to replace, the ones that made everyone look like they'd been tanning for three days straight. Maya adjusted her goggles, her heart doing that weird flutter thing it always did when HE was around.
Tyler. The guy who'd been swimming in the lane next to her since freshman year. The guy she'd been lowkey obsessed with since that one time he'd let her borrow his extra towel when hers mysteriously vanished from the locker room.
"You gonna stare at the water all day or actually swim?" Tyler teased, flicking water at her with that annoyingly perfect grin.
"Shut up, Tyler. I'm mentally preparing."
"Mentally preparing to lose?"
"I hate you so much."
He laughed and dove in, slicing through the water like some kind of genetically modified dolphin. Maya watched, equal parts annoyed and impressed, when her iPhone buzzed on the bench. Party tonight. Chloe's house. BE THERE or BE SQUARE.
Chloe's parties were legendary. The kind where someone always ended up in the pool fully clothed and the police showed up exactly once. Maya had never been. Never been invited, either, until this random text that felt both suspicious and thrilling.
Lightning cracked across the sky, purple-blue veins branching through the darkness. The pool lights flickered.
"Storm's coming in!" Coach shouted. "Everyone out, now!"
But Tyler wasn't moving. He was treading water in the middle of the pool, staring up at the storm like it was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen.
"Tyler! Get out!" Maya yelled, grabbing her phone and rushing to the edge.
"Come in with me!" he called back, grinning like a maniac. "It's literally perfect out here!"
Another lightning strike, closer this time. The whole deck lit up white-hot, shadows stretching long and distorted across the concrete. Maya stood at the edge, phone in hand, heart hammering against her ribs. This was it. The moment in every teen movie where the protagonist makes the wild choice.
She could go to Chloe's party. She could grab her bag and run to her car and spend the night pretending to be someone she wasn't, smiling at people who'd never noticed her until now.
Or.
Maya shoved her iPhone into her bag and dove.
The water was cold and electric, alive in a way that made everything else feel flat and dull. Tyler whooped as she surfaced next to him, both of them treading water as lightning painted the sky above them, the orange pool lights reflecting in his eyes.
"You're actually crazy," she said, splashing him.
"You're here too, aren't you?"
"Fair point."
They floated there as the storm raged around them, two tiny figures in an Olympic-sized pool, completely and wonderfully doomed if anyone found out. Maya's phone buzzed on the deck - Chloe's party, the social event of the season - and she didn't even care.
Sometimes the wildest choices weren't the ones anyone expected. Sometimes they were just swimming in a thunderstorm with someone who made your heart do gymnastics, letting the whole world wait while you figured out who you actually were.
Besides, her phone was probably waterproof. Probably.
