Thunder in My Pocket

vitaminlightningcablebear

Maya's hands shook so hard she almost dropped her phone for the third time. The screen litened with notifications—party invites, group chats, people asking if she was coming to Jake's house. Senior year. First real party. Her stomach did backflips that had nothing to do with the weird vitamin gummy she'd choked down earlier. Her sister swore they helped with 'social energy,' which was definitely not a thing.

Her phone dipped to 8%. No charging cable. Because obviously she'd forgotten it.

Outside, lightning cracked the sky like a photographer's flash on steroids. Perfect timing. The storm would give her an excuse to bail. She could just say her mom wanted her home before the weather got bad. Nobody had to know she'd been standing at her window for forty-five minutes, hyping herself up to go, then immediately talking herself out of it.

But her phone buzzed again. It was Jake. ' Everyone's asking about u. U coming?'

Maya groaned so loud her cat jumped off the bed. She grabbed her hoodie, her keys, and headed out into the humid night air. The sky kept lighting up—this wild, electric display that made everything feel possible and terrifying at the same time.

The party was already in full swing when she arrived. Music thumped through the floorboards. People everywhere—some she knew, some she didn't. Jake spotted her immediately and waved her over like she'd been his best friend since kindergarten.

'Maya! You made it!' He handed her a red cup. 'No pressure, but you're officially here now.'

She took it, surprised to find it was just punch. 'Yeah. Storm coming though.'

'That'll make it more epic.' He grinned. ' Nothing like a good thunderstorm to bring everyone together.'

And then she saw him—Caleb. Quiet, always drawing in the back of English class. He was standing by the snack table, looking just as out of place as she felt. Their eyes met, and he gave her this tiny nod that felt like some secret handshake.

'Maya?' Jake was saying. 'You okay?'

'Yeah.' She smiled for real this time. 'Just... I think I'm gonna go talk to Caleb.'

Jake raised an eyebrow but shrugged. 'Suit yourself.'

She crossed the room, heart pounding harder than the bass. Outside, lightning flashed again, illuminating everything in this sudden, perfect moment of clarity. She was here. She was doing this. And Caleb was actually smiling at her.

'Hey,' she said. 'I like your sketchbook.'

He looked surprised, then pleased. 'Thanks. You're Maya, right? From English?'

'That's me.' She took a sip of punch. 'So. You come to these things often?'

He laughed. 'First time. You?'

'First time,' she admitted. ' I think we're both bears in the wrong cave.'

He smiled—this genuine, crooked thing that made her stomach do something completely different than before. 'Maybe we can be bears together then.'

Outside, the storm finally broke. Rain drummed against the windows like applause. Maya's phone buzzed in her pocket—probably her mom wondering where she was. But for the first time all night, she didn't care.

She'd figure out the charging cable situation later. Right now, she was exactly where she needed to be.
