Thunder Crush at the Padel Court

Maya's summer was supposed to be chill—just hanging by the country club pool, scrolling TikTok, and surviving her parents' divorce drama. But then her best friend Kai signed her up for the beginner padel clinic, and everything got weird.

That's where she saw him—Lucas, leaning against the fence, yellow padel racket resting on his shoulder like he owned the place. Maya found herself volunteering to refill the water cooler just to walk past him.

"You're basically a spy now," Kai teased when they sat in the club café afterward, sharing fries. "Following his Insta, memorizing his schedule—next you're gonna tap his phone."

"Shut up," Maya said, but her face burned. She *had* been tracking his posts. She *had* noticed he practiced every Tuesday at 4 PM. It was lowkey obsessive, and she hated herself for it.

Then came the storm.

Maya stayed late after Tuesday's clinic, claiming she needed extra practice. Lucas was there, alone on court 3. She sat on the bench, pretending to scroll her phone while *actually* watching him through the fence gaps. Spy behavior? Definitely. Creepy? Maybe a little.

The sky went purple-gray. Lightning cracked so close the air tasted like ozone. Rain sheeted down, turning the padel court into a mirror.

Then Lucas looked right at her.

"You gonna stay out there in the lightning?" he called through the downpour. "Or you coming inside?"

Maya's heart hammered. She walked through the water pooling around the courts, rain plastering her hair to her face. Lucas held the door open, dripping wet, grinning like he'd known she was watching the whole time.

"Seen you watching me for weeks," he said, quiet over the thunder. "I was waiting for you to say hi."

The kiss wasn't movie-perfect—it tasted like rain and awkward first-time nerves. But when lightning flashed again, Maya didn't care about being smooth anymore.

Some crushes hit you like lightning. Others were just slow-building storms you had to walk through.
