Thunder at the Top of the Pyramid

Marcus stood at the bottom of the social pyramid, clutching his baseball glove like it was a lifeline. Sophomore year, and he was still that quiet kid who sat alone at lunch, practicing his swing in the backyard while everyone else posted TikToks about parties he wasn't invited to.

"You coming to the courts?" Jake asked, leaning against the lockers. Jake was at the apex of everything—varsity baseball starter, dating a junior, his Instagram followers climbing like a stock chart.

" Courts?"

" Padel. " Jake grinned. "Didn't know you played. Saw you hitting against that wall behind the gym. Solid form, my man."

Marcus blinked. Padel—that racquet sport his abuela taught him in the driveway every summer. The one he thought made him weird, not cool.

"Sure," Marcus said, his voice cracking.

That afternoon, everything shifted. They played for hours, Marcus's padel skills translating seamlessly to the baseball talk Jake and his friends threw around. Marcus made a joke about his pet goldfish, Neptune, having more game than him, and Jake actually laughed—not the fake kind, but real.

Then it happened. Across the chain-link fence, Chloe—the girl Marcus had been lowkey crushing on since September—waved at him.

"Hey Marcus!"

Lightning crackled through his chest, sharp and electric.

Jake bumped his shoulder. "She knows your name."

"She's in my bio class."

"Bro. She doesn't know my name, and I've literally talked to her like five times." Jake shook his head. "You've been playing us."

Marcus grinned, something loosening in his chest. The pyramid didn't feel so steep anymore.

"Baseball tryouts next week," Jake said. "You should come."

Marcus tightened his grip on the racquet. "Yeah," he said. "Yeah, I will."

That night, he fed Neptune an extra pinch of flakes. The goldfish circled his bowl like it was nothing, like this was just another Tuesday.

"You and me both, buddy," Marcus whispered. But for the first time, he believed it.
