Thunder and Vitamin Water

Maya's first day at the state fair was nothing like she expected. Her new friend Ricky handed her a bright yellow bottle.

"You'll need this," he said, grinning. "It's basically liquid lightning in a bottle. All the vitamin C you'll ever need to survive twelve hours of smelling like fried dough."

Maya took the vitamin water. Her mom had packed her actual vitamins in her lunch bag, but somehow swallowing them felt different from chugging an energy drink while wearing a polyester uniform that said MAYA on the pocket.

The mechanical bull stood in the center of the fairgrounds, surrounded by cheering crowds. That was her station.

"You're kidding," Maya said.

"Everyone's gotta ride the bull at least once," Ricky shrugged. "Even if it's just to help other people off it when they faceplant."

She made it through three hours. Then the sky turned that weird greenish color that means weather is about to get serious. The first crack of lightning sent everyone screaming toward the exits. The bull operator vanished before he could shut it down.

The mechanical bull kept bucking. Empty.

Maya stood there in the drizzle, watching it. A tall guy her age stood nearby, staring at the storm clouds like he was having a moment.

"You gonna ride that thing?" he asked. "Because that would be honestly iconic."

She looked at the bull. At the lightning flashing closer. At her vitamin water sitting on the counter.

"I have to turn it off," she said. "But I've never even touched a real bull before. Mechanical or otherwise."

"That's the point, though, right?" He smiled. "Being scared is what makes it worth doing."

Maya climbed on. The bull lurched beneath her. She lasted four seconds before flying off into the sawdust. The guy was clapping. Ricky was taking a video. Her knees were scraped, her uniform smelled like rain and adrenaline, and somewhere in the chaos, she'd lost her name tag.

But she was laughing.

The storm broke. The real fair workers reappeared. Maya walked to her car, knees streaked with dirt, feeling absolutely electric.

Her phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number: *this is bear from the storm. you were legendary on that bull.*

She saved the contact. Sometimes the best stories start with getting thrown off your feet.
