Thunder and Sweat
Maya's palms were practically dripping as she stood outside Jordan's house. The bass from inside thumped against her chest like a second heartbeat. She smoothed her vintage bucket hat for the fiftieth time, checking her reflection in the darkened window.
"You got this," she whispered to herself. "You're not gonna be weird tonight. No overthinking. Just vibes."
The door swung open before she could knock. Jordan stood there, grinning. "Maya! Finally! Party's in full swing, my guy."
Social initiation complete. Step one: don't sweat through your shirt.
Inside, the living room transformed into a teenage kingdom. LED lights bounced off walls, people clustered in islands of conversation, and somewhere, someone was definitely filming a TikTok. Maya spotted Leo near the makeshift dance floor, wearing that oversized jacket that made him look like a walking cloud.
The plan: casually approach him. The reality: her brain short-circuited like lightning had struck her nervous system directly.
"Hey," she managed, her voice cracking.
"Maya!" Leo's face lit up. "I was hoping you'd come."
Hope. Dangerous.
Then Mia appeared from nowhere, sliding between them like a cat claiming territory. "Leo, you have to see something outside!"
Social dynamics 101: always assume you're being played.
Maya followed them anyway, because apparently she enjoyed emotional self-harm. They ended up on the back porch, where Jordan's sister sat cross-legged with a weird grin on her face.
"I call myself the Sphinx," the sister announced. "Answer my riddle, and you can crash here tonight without Jordan telling your parents."
"What?" Leo asked.
"What has roots as nobody sees, is taller than trees, up, up it goes, and yet never grows?"
Maya's brain stalled. Taller than trees? Roots nobody sees? Something about mountains? But her palms were sweating again, her mind blank like a crashed computer.
"A mountain," she blurted.
"Correct." The Sphinx smirked. "You're smarter than you look."
Leo turned to her, eyes bright. "That was actually impressive. Most people would've said 'a building' or something stupid."
"Yeah, well." Maya adjusted her hat. "I watch a lot of random stuff on TikTok."
"No, seriously." He stepped closer. "You're, like, surprisingly cool."
The moment stretched between them like held breath. Then actual lightning cracked across the sky, followed by thunder that shook the porch.
"Guess the storm's finally here," Leo said. "Perfect timing."
"For what?"
He smiled. "For whatever happens next."
Maya's palms might have been sweating, her social anxiety might have been screaming, and Mia might still be plotting something. But in that moment, under the lightning-painted sky, Maya realized something important: sometimes the cringiest moments make the best stories.
And she was ready to make this one legendary.
