Thunder and Screen Glow
The summer storm raged outside Maya's bedroom window, but inside, her iphone was her whole world. She'd been messaging Ryan for three hours straight — the new guy from camp who'd somehow become her closest friend in just two weeks. They'd stayed up late every night since getting back, trading memes and inside jokes until her eyes burned.
Then came the lightning flash that changed everything.
Her phone screen went black. Just like that — no warning, no gradual fade. Maya stared at the dark glass, heart pounding. Was it the storm? Had the power surge fried her lifeline?
She grabbed her old backup phone from the drawer, fingers shaking. The ancient thing took forever to boot up, and when it finally did, she saw it: one new message from Ryan. Her stomach did that stupid flutter thing it always did now.
"Hey, you okay? Phone cut off mid-text lol"
Maya started typing back, then paused. The storm outside mirrored the chaos in her head. She'd been so focused on Ryan's messages, on becoming someone who fit into his world, that she hadn't even noticed the lightning show outside. Or how her real friends kept texting about hanging out, and she kept brushing them off.
Another lightning strike illuminated her room, and for a second, she saw herself in the mirror — phone clutched like a lifeline, eyes desperate.
What was she doing?
She texted Ryan back: "Yeah phone died! Storm's crazy out here. Hey, my friends are doing this thing tomorrow, want to come?"
The response came fast: "Absolutely!"
Maya watched the storm through her window, lightning painting the sky purple and gold. Her iphone would probably be fine after rice therapy, but something had shifted. Maybe sometimes losing connection was exactly what you needed to find it again.
