Three Words Storm

Maya's phone buzzed with another notification from the group chat. The squad was planning Friday night—without her. Again.

"Whatever," she muttered, scrolling through Instagram. Her goldfish bowl sat on the nightstand, its lone occupant swimming endless circles. Goldfish had a three-second memory, people said. Sometimes Maya wished she could be that oblivious. Just swim, forget, swim, forget. No awkward hallway encounters with former friends. No replaying conversations that went sideways.

Then: *lightning crack of opportunity.*

Tyler from AP Bio slid into her DMs. "Hey, noticed your art posts. That sketch of the oak tree by the football field? Actually fire."

Maya's stomach did that thing—like dropping down an elevator shaft. Tyler. The guy whose locker was three down from hers. The guy she'd been low-key obsessed with since September.

But her brain immediately went full *bull* mode. *What's his angle? Who put him up to this? Is this some messed-up challenge?*

Because that's what happened after the incident with Jenna and the leaked texts. Trust issues for days. Everyone became a potential enemy combatant in the social battlefield.

Maya stared at Tyler's message. Her thumb hovered over reply. The goldfish swam by, glass walls reflecting her own overthinking face back at her.

*Swim. Forget. Swim. Forget.*

Maybe it was time to break the cycle.

"Thanks," she typed back, heart hammering. "I'm working on something new. Want to see?"

His reply came seconds later: "Absolutely. Also, my band's playing at The Warehouse on Saturday. You should come. No pressure, but... genuinely hope you do."

Maya set down her phone. Lightning flashed outside her window, illuminating everything—the goldfish bowl, her sketchbook, the possibility of something new. Something real.

Some storms destroy. Others clear the air so you can finally see what's been there all along.

She grabbed her sketchbook and started drawing. Not circles, but a path forward.
