Three Strikes and a Soul

Marcus stood in left field, glove sweating, pretending like he knew what he was doing. The baseball uniform felt like a costume—which, technically, it was. He'd only joined the team because Jessica, the girl he'd been crushing on since September, had mentioned liking guys who played sports.

"You good, Marcus?" called Tyler from second base, dipping his head.

"Yeah. Just... vibing."

A cat darted across the outfield, orange tail blazing like a flame. Marcus flinched. Great. Now even nature was roasting him.

Then came the bark. A massive dog—a golden retriever, unleashed and ecstatic—came barreling onto the field, chasing the cat. chaos erupted. The umpire shouted. Players scattered. Marcus stood frozen as the cat scrambled up the chain-link fence and the dog jumped at it, whining.

"That's my dog!" someone yelled from the bleachers.

Marcus moved before he could think it through. He grabbed the dog's collar—"Buster" read the tag—and pulled him back gently. The cat, now perched safely on the fence post, meowed indignantly.

"You okay, little guy?" Marcus whispered to the cat, who surprisingly let him scoop her up. "You're a mess, you know that?"

Jessica appeared beside him. "That was... actually kind of cool."

Marcus shrugged. "Just doing what needed to be done."

"No, seriously." She smiled. "Most guys would've kept playing. You stopped everything for these two."

He looked at the dog sitting obediently beside him, the cat purring against his chest. Something clicked. He'd spent months trying to be someone he wasn't—all for a girl who liked him better when he was just being himself.

"Hey," Jessica said, "want to help me get these two back to their owner? I think we should probably skip the rest of the game."

Marcus grinned, handing over his glove. "Yeah. Let's dip."

Sometimes the best plays aren't the ones you plan. They're the ones that find you when you finally stop performing and start living.
