Three Strikes and a Haircut
I woke up feeling like total **zombie** mode—three hours of sleep will do that to you. The mirror confirmed my worst nightmare: my **hair** had somehow morphed into a science experiment gone wrong. My mom had insisted on giving me a trim last night because, and I quote, "You can't show up to varsity tryouts looking like you just rolled out of bed." Spoiler alert: now I looked like I'd lost a fight with a lawnmower.
My **cat**, Luna, sat on the counter watching me with that judgy look cats specialize in. Like, thanks for the commentary, Luna. At least someone's enjoying my spiral.
I yanked my favorite **baseball** cap low over my forehead, praying nobody would notice the disaster underneath. Not that I could skip today—tryouts for the varsity team were happening, and I'd been prepping for months. Coach Miller didn't mess around. If you showed up looking like you'd been partying instead of sleeping, you'd be warming the bench in five seconds flat.
The **hat** became my lifeline. My best friend Jordan raised an eyebrow when I met him at the field. "Rough night?"
"You could say that." I adjusted the brim, suddenly hyper-aware that every movement threatened to expose the chaos beneath. "Just tired. Don't make it weird."
"I'm not making it weird," Jordan said, failing to suppress a grin. "Your vibe is making it weird."
Coach blew his whistle. "Batting practice! Let's see what you've got!"
My fingers trembled slightly gripping the bat. Step in the batter's box. Focus. The pitch came—a fastball right down the middle. I connected, feeling that perfect solid contact echoing through my arms, the ball sailing past the outfielder.
Then came the aftermath.
My **hat** flew off, revealing the absolute disaster that was my hair. I expected laughter. Instead, Jordan tossed me his spare with a grin.
"That was beautiful," he said. "Also, what is happening on your head?"
I rolled my eyes. "Don't ask."
"Hey." He shrugged. "At least you hit it out of the park. Bad hair days can't stop you."
Maybe it was time I stopped hiding. Messy hair and all.
