Three Seconds of Wild
Zara stared at her reflection, fingers tangling in the curls she'd spent three years suppressing. Straightening irons, chemical treatments, endless tutorials on YouTube—all to make herself look like everyone else at Northwood High. Tonight, with sophomore year starting tomorrow, she'd finally washed it all out.
"Zara!" Maya burst through her bedroom door, skateboard in hand. "County fair. Last night of summer. We're going."
Maya stopped mid-step, eyes widening. "Your hair. It's... it's YOU."
"It looks crazy," Zara mumbled, reaching for her old beanie.
"It looks awesome," Maya countered. "Now come on. Before I change my mind."
The fair smelled like fried dough and desperation. Zara kept pulling at her curls, hyper-aware of every stare. Until they reached it—the mechanical bull, surrounded by a crowd of kids from school. Including Brianna and her perfectly straight blonde hair, watching some guy cling for dear life before tumbling into the inflatable padding.
"That's bull," Brianna giggled. "He lasted, what, two seconds?"
Maya grabbed Zara's arm. "Your turn."
"No way." Zara shook her head violently. "Everyone will—"
"Everyone will what?" Maya's voice softened. "Z, you've been hiding since seventh grade. Hiding your hair, hiding your opinions, hiding yourself. This ride lasts three seconds max. What's three seconds of being seen?"
The operator strapped her in. The bull lurched beneath her, and her hair broke completely free—wild coils spinning like a halo around her head. She caught Brianna's shocked expression. She felt Maya filming, cheering her name.
She flew off sideways, landing in a heap of laughter and limbs.
Three seconds. That was it.
Maya helped her up, still giggling. "That was terrifying."
"Yeah," Zara breathed, grinning so hard her face hurt. "Yeah it was."
A guy from her history class high-fived her. "Sick hair, by the way."
Zara's hand found Maya's, squeezing tight. Some friends just watched you hide. The real ones held your hand while you learned how to stop.
