Three Seconds of Forever
Kai felt like a literal goldfish in a bowl—well, less like the fish and more like the awkward pebbles at the bottom, just existing while everyone else swam circles around him. The party at Maya's house was basically a social pyramid, with the popular kids at the top, normal people in the middle, and him somewhere in the basement trying not to make eye contact with anyone.
"Bro, you good?" His best friend Dev handed him a drink. "You've been standing here watching papaya cubes on a platter like they contain the secrets of the universe."
Kai laughed. "These papaya chunks are the most interesting things here. At least they don't judge my existence."
But the truth was, he wasn't just watching fruit. He was spy-mode observing Sophie—the girl he'd been lowkey crushing on since seventh grade. She was across the room, laughing with her friends, her hair perfect, her confidence radiating like she owned the space.
Then she looked at him. Actually looked at him. Their eyes locked for what felt like three full seconds.
"She's coming over," Dev hissed. "Panic or prepare, your choice."
Sophie approached. "Hey Kai, having fun?"
His brain short-circuited. "The papaya is surprisingly good."
She laughed—not the fake polite laugh, but a real one. "My mom cut it fresh. Want to see my room? I have something to show you."
As they walked upstairs, Dev gave him a thumbs-up. In Sophie's room, she pulled out her phone.
"I saw you at the aquarium last weekend," she said, showing him a photo she'd posted—a goldfish, tiny and bright, swimming in endless blue. "You looked really happy watching them."
Kai felt his face heat up. "You noticed?"
"I notice things." She smiled, and for the first time, the social pyramid didn't seem so rigid. "Anyway, that fish looked free. Just swimming, not worrying about fitting in. I thought that was kinda beautiful."
"Yeah," Kai said. "Actually, it was."
Maybe goldfish moments weren't so bad after all. Sometimes you just had to swim in your own lane, papaya observation and all.
