Three Seconds of Forever

Maya's reflection stared back from the black mirror of her iphone, cracked screen splintering her face into jagged pieces. Four hundred and twelve unread messages. Mom asking where she was. Jake's meme spams. The group chat blowing up about Tyler's party that she wasn't at. She swiped them all to unseen, thumbs moving on muscle memory.

"You know goldfish have a three-second memory," her dad had said last month, unpacking boxes in their new apartment across the country. "Maybe that's not so bad. Just keep swimming forward."

Now she stood at the edge of the school courtyard, clutching a small plastic bag containing Walter—a carnival goldfish she'd won because some senior thought it'd be hilarious to make the new girl try. The water was already clouding. Walter kept opening and closing his mouth, like he had something important to say but couldn't remember what.

"Fresh meat," someone whispered behind her. Three girls in perfectly coordinated orange spirit wear—cheerleaders, obviously. Maya had worn orange on her first day too. She'd never worn it since.

Her iphone buzzed. Jake: u good?

She stared at Walter, swimming in tiny panicked circles. Three seconds, then everything new again. No anxiety about fitting in. No记忆 of old friends left behind. No pressure to perform.

Maya did something impulsive. She fished Walter out with her bare hands—slimy, flopping, alive—and dropped him into the school's ornamental pond, where koi the size of cats drifted like fallen leaves. He looked tiny. He looked terrified. He looked completely unbothered a second later, already investigating a water lily.

She pulled out her cracked iphone and opened the camera. Not a selfie. Not a curated aesthetic shot. Just the pond, the orange sunset reflecting off the water, Walter already making friends with his giant cousins.

Sent to Jake. Sent to Mom. Sent to the group chat.

Her phone lit up with reactions. hearts. fire emojis. tyler's party could wait.

Maybe goldfish had it figured out. Three seconds at a time, forward into whatever came next.
