Three Seconds of Chaos

The pool party at Jessica's house was supposed to be my chance. Finally, after three months of subtle Instagram story replies and hallway nods, I'd make my move. I'd practiced my opening line approximately four hundred times in the bathroom mirror.

"Hey Mason!" Jessica waved from the deep end. "Come swimming!"

This was it. I executed what I thought was a confident nod but what my friend Terrence later described as "a confused pigeon." I climbed onto the diving board, channeling main character energy, ready to show everyone the cool diving trick I'd spent all summer perfecting.

But as I pushed off, physics decided to humble me. My rotation went wrong. My body folded like a lawn chair. I hit the water with all the grace of a dropped textbook.

When I surfaced, everyone was staring. Not the impressed staring I'd envisioned. The concerned staring you reserve for car crash victims.

"You okay?" Jessica asked, her voice dripping with secondhand embarrassment.

"Totally," I said, smooth as sandpaper. "Testing the water displacement."

Then I felt it. Something weird in my mouth. I'd accidentally swallowed pool water, and now something was lodged in my teeth. I ran my tongue over it. A leaf? No, worse. A piece of spinach from the Garrett family's famous dip that I'd decimated earlier.

I was treading water in the deep end, unable to speak, unable to escape, with spinach visibly decorating my front teeth like green festive lights. I looked like a goldfish caught in a filter, my mouth opening and closing in silent panic.

Terrence, the traitor, started laughing. Soon the entire pool party joined in. Not mean laughter—just the universal laughter of someone else's misfortune.

"You have a little..." Jessica made a circular motion at her teeth.

I swam to the edge, defeated. But as I climbed out, Jessica handed me a napkin.

"That dive was brave though," she said, grinning. "Maybe try just jumping in next time?"

I nodded. Good advice. Sometimes the coolest move is just showing up and accepting that you're going to faceplant occasionally.
