Three Point Match

padelgoldfishrunning

Maya stood outside the community center, clutching her borrowed padel racquet like it might explode. The neon green court through the glass doors looked like alien territory where confident, athletic people actually knew what they were doing.

"You coming in or what?" Liam called from inside, already bouncing on his toes like he'd been born in tennis shoes.

Maya's throat went dry. She'd agreed to this stupid beginner padel clinic because Chloe had mentioned she might be there, and because Maya was tired of being the girl who always said "maybe next time." But now that she was actually here, the 15-year-old version of herself wanted to bolt.

Her goldfish memory of last year's gym class disaster—serving a volleyball directly into Mr. Harrison's face—flashed through her mind. That moment still lived rent-free in her head, defining her as hopelessly uncoordinated.

"Maya!" Chloe waved from across the court, looking perfect in her athletic outfit. "Save me a spot!"

Something in Maya shifted. She could keep running away from every opportunity to try, or she could actually show up. Even if she embarrassed herself. Even if she served the ball into someone's face again.

She stepped onto the court, heart pounding.

The first hour was disaster. Her racquet kept hitting the wall instead of the ball. Her coordination was apparently on vacation. But then—miraculously—she connected. A perfect forehand that sailed past her opponent.

"YESSS!" Liam high-fived her so hard her palm stung.

By the end, Maya was sweaty, exhausted, and grinning like an idiot. She'd even managed to hit a winning shot in the final match point. Chloe had texted her afterward: "You're actually good?? We should play this weekend."

Walking home, Maya realized she'd spent so long running from anything that might reveal her flaws that she'd forgotten what it felt like to be brave. Maybe she wasn't the most athletic person ever. But she was someone who showed up.

Her phone buzzed—a group chat forming for weekend padel sessions. Maya typed "I'm in" before her brain could talk her out of it.

Small victories. They counted.
