Three Minutes to Panic

Maya's hair had declared war. One side curled like a romance novel cover, the other side flattened like she'd slept on a textbook. Of course, today of all days—the day Jordan finally noticed her existence beyond "that quiet girl in bio"—her hair looked like it had been styled by an angry windstorm.

She picked up her iPhone, thumbs hovering over Jordan's text: "hockey game @ 7? everyone's going"

Her heart did that annoying flippy thing it always did when his name popped up onscreen. But the mirror told a different story. There was no way she could show up looking like this. Not at her first actual social event.

"Maya! You're gonna be late!" her mom yelled from downstairs.

"I know! Just... fixing stuff!"

Running late was an understatement. She had exactly seven minutes before she needed to catch the bus, which would get her to the rink with three minutes to spare. Three minutes to casually act like she hadn't spent twenty-seven minutes staring at her reflection and mentally cataloging everything wrong with her face.

Her iPhone pinged again. "u coming? ;)

The winky face. The winky face meant something. It had to mean something.

She grabbed her brush, attacking her hair with renewed desperation. The more she brushed, the worse it got. Physics had personally betrayed her. Static electricity made the frizzy pieces stand up like she'd stuck her finger in a socket.

Running downstairs, her phone clutched in her hand like a lifeline, she called over her shoulder: "Mom, I need a ride! The bus isn't happening!"

"You have legs, Maya!"

"Mom, PLEASE!"

Her mom sighed from the kitchen. "Fine. But you owe me dishes for a week."

"Deal!"

Maya caught her reflection in the hallway mirror. Her hair was still a disaster. But Jordan was waiting. The winky face was waiting.

Her iPhone buzzed with another text: "cool if u can't make it. maybe next time?"

And just like that, the panic dissolved. He'd asked again. He wanted her there. Next time existed.

She typed back: "on my way! hair is a mess but I'm coming lol"

His reply came instantly: "lol it's fine. see u soon"

Maya grabbed her jacket and ran out the door, hair wild and heart full. Maybe imperfection wasn't the end of the world. Maybe it was just... part of the story.
