Three Feet Under

waterfriendiphone

The pool deck at Tyler's party was basically a runway. Everyone in sophomore year was there, perfectly positioned in their best outfits, phones glued to hands like lifelines. I clutched my iPhone 15 against my chest, its case slick with condensation from the humidity. Three notifications from Mia lit up my screen: where r u??? u coming??? hello???

Mia was supposed to be my best friend, but ever since she'd started sitting with the popular crowd at lunch, I'd become invisible. A background character in her own movie.

"Hey!" A voice called out, and I turned to see Jordan Chen, the quiet kid from my English class, standing near the deep end. She wasn't taking photos. She wasn't performing for an audience. She was just... standing there, watching the ripples in the water.

Something in me snapped. I marched over to the pool's edge and sat down, letting my legs dangle in the cool water. Not on my phone. Not posting a story. Just existing.

"Nice," Jordan said, sitting beside me. "The water's actually pretty perfect."

"Yeah," I said, and something loosened in my chest. "Hey, Jordan?"

"What's up?"

"Can I tell you something kinda embarrassing?"

She laughed. "Only if I can match your energy."

"Deal." I took a breath. "I've been so obsessed with curating this perfect life on my phone that I forgot how to actually live one. Mia's over there acting like I don't exist, and I've been spending the whole party staring at my screen instead of talking to people."

Jordan nodded. "Last week, I spent forty-five minutes taking the perfect photo of my coffee. Didn't even taste it until it was cold." She bumped my shoulder. "Wild concept: phones are tools, not personalities."

I looked at my iPhone, then at the twinkling pool lights reflecting off the water. Something shifted—a weight I hadn't realized I was carrying.

"Wanna make a pact?" I asked. "Next hour, zero photos. Just vibes."

"You're speaking my language." Jordan grinned. "Race you to the other side?"

"You're on."

And as I plunged into the cool water, phone safely tucked away on dry land, I realized this was the most authentic moment I'd had in months. Sometimes the real connections happen when you're three feet under and finally willing to come up for air.
