Three Bars, No Signal

iphonebearcat

Maya's thumbs moved like lightning across her iphone screen, crafting the perfect caption for the hiking photo she'd just taken. "Living my best life #nature #blessed" — classic, generic, safe. Just like everything else on her feed.

Then her boot slipped on loose shale, sending the iphone tumbling down the ridge. She watched it bounce against rocks, crack against a pine tree, and vanish into the brush below.

"No, no, NO!" Maya scrambled after it, heart pounding like she'd just failed a final exam. But as she pushed through the bushes, she froze.

A bear stood ten feet away, regarding her with mild curiosity. Not the filtered, majestic kind from nature documentaries — this one was mangy, with patchy fur and a suspicious-looking bald spot. It looked like it was having a worse day than she was.

Maya's breath hitched. This wasn't an Instagram moment. This wasn't something she could curate or filter. This was just… real.

The bear snorted, turned, and lumbered away.

From behind a nearby oak, a calico cat emerged — clearly domesticated, judging by the collar with tiny rhinestones. The cat approached Maya cautiously, then rubbed against her legs like they'd known each other for years.

"Where did YOU come from?" Maya whispered, sinking to her knees. The cat purred loudly, completely unimpressed by the bear encounter, the lost phone, or Maya's spiraling existential crisis about her entire online persona being fake.

A sudden thought struck her: this cat lived here. In the woods. Where there were BEARS. What kind of chaotic fearless energy was that?

Maya spent the next hour searching for her phone with the cat following like a tiny, furry supervisor. When she finally found it — screen shattered, three deep cracks — something felt different.

The cat chirped, then bounded back toward what must be a nearby trail.

Her phone was ruined, but Maya felt weirdly lighter. No filters, no captions, no performing for an audience she couldn't see. Just a bear with a bad hair day, a cat with too much confidence, and the most real thing that had happened to her in months.

She followed the cat toward the trail, already planning what she'd say when her friends asked about the broken phone. Actually, maybe she wouldn't say anything at all. Maybe she'd just… live it.
